Massage therapy is defined as the scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of normalizing those tissues and consists of manual techniques that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, and/or causing movement of or to the body. (Farlex dictionary). By manipulating the soft tissues, our intention is to reduce stress, and relieve pain and muscle tension. In equine massage we utilize a combination of five Swedish massage techniques:
- EFFLEURAGE – Long, smooth and gliding strokes that begin to warm up the muscles and bring presence to the work.
- PETRISSAGE – Kneading of the muscles.
- TAPOTEMENT – Tapping or percussive movements to help open energetic flow.
- FRICTION – Firm, circular rubbing motions to bring energy anywhere on the body.
- VIBRATION – Shaking or vibrating muscles to wake up a muscle or bring energy to an area.
Trigger point therapy massage targets pressure sensitive knots and adhesions in the muscles. These ‘trigger point’ areas can be extremely painful, occur anywhere in the body, and often restrict blood flow. When blood flow is restricted, the delivery of nutrients and oxygen becomes limited. This limitation contributes to the onset of inflammation and pain. As part of a full bodywork session, a combination of manual and trigger point therapy massage will be formulated dependent on your horse’s individual needs.
