Moxabustion, also known as moxa, is a therapy that involves burning dried mugwort above or on acupuncture points to generate heat. Heat is used to stimulate pressure points and is believed to increase blood circulation, reduce pain and inflammation, and boost immune function. moxabustion can be beneficial for animals, especially after a traumatic event or during healing. For example, some veterinarians recommend using moxa sticks on cold or damp days when an animal seems stiff.

In equine moxabustion, we apply the moxa indirectly so that the burning moxa never comes in contact with the horse’s skin. The intention is to strengthen the blood, and stimulate the flow of Qi, or energy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that an increase in the circulation of Qi can help the body heal from a variety of issues including digestive problems and chronic pain.

One study found that moxabustion can help protect the synovium of joints in animal models with rheumatoid arthritis by increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines and decreasing proinflammatory cytokines. This 2020 study as published in the National Library of Medicine, Effect of moxabustion on Inflammatory Cytokines in Animals with Rheumatoid Arthritis, states: “The findings of the present review indicate that moxabustion can protect the synovium of joint in animal models with RA by enhancing the level of anti-inflammatory cytokines and decreasing the level of proinflammatory cytokines. moxabustion has the potential to relieve inflammation in animal models with RA.”

As part of a bodywork session, moxabustion may be suggested, and will only be administered with permission from the owner and facility management. Together, we will determine if this is an option that is suitable for the animal and the immediate environment.
